I have several carry options, but my favorite is my Ruger SP101, 3”, in .357 Magnum. For just day-to-day bopping around town, I often pocket carry either a small .380 auto or a 5-shot .38 snubbie. I also participate in a security role at my synagogue; for that situation I either carry a full-size M1911 .45 or one of two other full-size 9mm handguns I own, OWB, under my sport jacket. But the SP101 is my “Swiss Army Knife” carry gun. If it’s too hot for wearing a sport jacket, at the synagogue, I’ll just pocket carry my SP101. It’s only five shots, I know, but I have five more in a speed loader on me and it is .357, after all. With that revolver I feel well armed enough for that situation. But it is also just small enough that I can carry it around in day-to-day life as well; a bit heavy but still discreet and it has the range, accuracy, and power to handle an Eli Dicken type scenario if it emerges in my local supermarket. I carry it more and more these days because it is so versatile. At the end of the day it goes in my nightstand, I switch out the Critical Duty carry ammo for Hydra Shok (trading penetration for expansion), and it is perfect for home defense (got a tritium sight up front for low light). It’s a solid, ultra reliable, and powerful firearm. And it will accommodate me as I age. Right now I’m 62, and I can still handle .357 out of it just fine (was even at the range with it earlier today as I write this), but as I get older, if I find that my wrists can’t take .357 anymore, I can switch to .38 Special +P and with a 3” barrel I will still get good performance, and with that 27 ounce weight, it will be a pussycat to shoot. Revolvers are awesome. You are on the right path.

@@ArchetypeofMan that's alright it shows you are taking it seriously. I have seen people not take it seriously and fail. I was assisting at an IDC class when a student who just happened to be a police firearms instructor failed. He was not prepared for the pace and content of the class. Your shooting looks squared away, but make sure you brush up on a little 25 yard work. Don't go out and party at night but study your homework for the written test. It will be great.

I have a Ruger LCP2 in 22LR. The ammo that is recommended for this gun doesnt work in my gun..my gun chokes on it with jams and misfeeds..not at all reliable. The only time its 100% reliable is if I use ammo that is not recommended for this gun and is not suppose to work well in it..But it works well in my gun.

Great review of this firearm. I just got a steel frame matte black 85 for $200. Great shooter and very reliable. Single and double action are smooth. The gun is not as heavy as one would think. Also these models are +P rated. I called Taurus to verify it. Keeping this one. The only problem now is that my wife wants it.

Of the many Ruger revolvers my father and I have bought over the years, all of them (more than 5) had to go back to the factory. Many of them twice. One even went back 3 times. All because the triggers would eventually stop working. Something about the MIM parts broke down. I even had the transfer bar on a .22lr GP100 sheer in half. Rugers are made like junk. This 'built like a tank' nonsense is just marketing mumbojumbo. The rugers happen to have excess steel because they wouldn't function properly without it due to the casting of the frames. Forge a frame properly instead and it can be not quite as thick while being at least as strong.

I am guilty of disliking kydex because it damages the finish of my gun. I also don't like it because it is uncomfortable and noisy. Leather looks, feels, and smells better. I also don't like relying on a friction fit to retain my gun in my holster. I like to have a top strap of some kind. One doesn't see many kydex holsters with top straps (unless it's a duty holster, but I'm talking off duty concealment type holsters here).

There are few guns I'd consider it's equal. Granted, it's large so it won't conceal as easily as a Glock 19, etc. It has a double action trigger, which is going to be harder to learn than a striker fired setup like the Glocks. BUT.... It's a very versatile, durable, and reliable handgun. A step up from polymer striker fired guns, in my opinion, but not into custom, high end (and highly priced) territory. Depending on what you want to do with it, I think it's a great option.

My main issue with a weapons-mounted light, is the idea that you're about to identify a threat (presumably human) with your loaded muzzle pointed at it before you know what in the world it is, who in the world it is, or why in the world it is. Many legal and moral implications about that, besides the idea that something startling can likely cause a trigger finger to do something you didn't want a trigger finger to do. Also in a sense of an experienced threat, a bright light provides a great target to fire at. The only exception I would have would be location, such as being out in the country away from public, in a situation where it is 99% likely a dangerous animal could be prowling and needs identified with a rifle (and a light). The issue is not the light. The issue is making a light in essence a bullet-firing light. I do believe they should be separate the vast majority of the time. I appreciate your candidness in the process of learning and admitting things.

Other dangerous stuff: -Chemicals Big Food Inc. put into store bought meats, grains, and sprayed all over vegetables. -Cigarettes. -Alcohol drinking (for the drinker and for those nearby). -Social media is dangerous (to the mind). -Cell phones in cars moving around. -Toxic people at workplaces. -Government officials who disregard the Constitution of the USA. And finally, motorcyclists who crack their head on something or scrape their skin on the pavement, and then say motorcycles are dangerous (having shown zero preparation for the act of riding). All of that out of the way, there's never been a time since the invention of the motorcycle when there's been better, more effective equipment to protect riders. Textiles, leather, impact armor, airbags in vests and jackets and pants, top quality helmets, neck braces, spinal protectors, and on and on. People who get messed up in a crack on a motorcycle only have themselves to blame for being ignorant. I love motorcycles.

Not all single-action 22 revolvers are created equal. Ruger Single Six convertible with the 6.5-inch barrel averages 1403 fps with the exact same .22wmr ammo. Heritage just isn't worth it. How they manage to drop 300 fps over the Ruger is beyond me.
